The Nissan Qashqai has seating for five, with no seven-seater option. For that, you’ll want to check out the larger (but similar) Nissan X-Trail. But the Qashqai is roomy enough for most families’ needs.

2014-2020 Nissan Qashqais could be had with a diesel engine, and that was popular so there are plenty to buy or lease used. If you’re looking to buy or lease a new Nissan Qashqai, however, it’s now petrol only. However, there is an e-Power hybrid model that offers diesel-like fuel efficiency.

• Nissan Qashqai DiG-T 140 petrol: The entry point to the Qashqai range is a 140PS 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. Capable of the 0-60mph sprint in 10.6 seconds, it’ll also achieve fuel economy of 44.8mpg on the official combined cycle. You can only order this version with a six-speed manual transmission. 

• Nissan Qashqai DiG-T 158 petrol: Also available is a more powerful 158PS version of the same 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. The 0-62mph time falls to 9.5 seconds. It can be ordered with two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, with the latter only available with an Xtronic automatic transmission. Economy ranges from 40mpg (4WD) to 45mpg (2WD).

• Nissan Qashqai e-Power hybrid: It’s not a plug-in hybrid, but a self-charging one. This particular system uses a 1.3-litre petrol engine to power the electric motor and battery, rather than the engine power going to the wheels. The layout means it’ll achieve 53.3mpg combined.

The cheapest Nissan Qashqai to buy is the Visia model. It’s not too basic, but importantly misses out on any touchscreen media system, with just a DAB radio with Bluetooth. It does get adaptive cruise control, however, along with LED front and rear lights, 17in alloys and a comprehensive list of active safety technology. 

Moving up to the Nissan Qashqai Acenta Premium brings that all-important eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, dual-zone climate control, a rear-view camera and keyless entry. It’s still pretty affordable, though, so it’s our pick for a cheaper Qashqai to buy or lease. 

The mid-spec Nissan Qashqai N-Connecta is a bit classier in design, with 18in alloy wheels, privacy glass and ambient lighting inside the cabin. Along with that, you’ll get front parking sensors to match the rear ones, a bigger nine-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and a 360-degree around view camera system. 

Splash out for the higher-end Tekna model and you’ll get 19in alloy wheels, the Drive Assist system for semi-autonomous driving in certain situations, a head-up display, adaptive LED headlights and a hands-free electric bootlid. Full leather also features, as does a panoramic roof.

Tekna+ sits at the very top of the range, with niceties such as 20in alloy wheels, special quilted leather, electric front seats with a massaging function, a Bose premium sound system and an intelligent key.
