At the entry point of the range is the good value Ford Kuga Zetec, while the sporty ST-Line model has extra kit and visual impact. Then there’s the posh Vignale model, which brings a classy design and premium car equipment. 

There are plenty of used Ford Kugas available with diesel engines, but the latest car is only offered to buy or lease new with either petrol, ‘self-charging’ hybrid or plug-in hybrid engine options. 

Ford Kuga petrol: The most affordable engine is a 150PS 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol. With claimed fuel economy of 42mpg, it’ll do 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds. Ford only offers it with a six-speed manual gearbox, so automatic buyers will have to look to the hybrids. 

• Ford Kuga hybrid: There are two types of hybrid Ford Kugas. The first is a ‘self-charging’ hybrid, mating a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, combined with a little 1.1kWh battery pack. Charging itself up as you brake or coast, with no need to plug in, it’ll do 51.4mpg combined and hit 62mph in 9.1 seconds. It only comes with a CVT automatic gearbox. 

• Ford Kuga plug-in hybrid (PHEV): The other type of Ford Kuga hybrid is a plug-in, which means it’ll run on petrol power unless you keep it charged up from a public charger or home wallbox. With the same 2.5-litre petrol engine but a bigger 14.4kWh battery, quoted fuel economy is up to 282mpg and you can run it for up to 39 miles in electric mode. Sprinting from 0-62mph in 9.2 seconds, it’s also a CVT automatic. 

Ford Kuga features as standard & optional extras

Every Ford Kuga is well-equipped, even the basic Zetec model. That comes kitted out with a an eight-inch touchscreen sat-nav featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, 17in alloy wheels, auto emergency braking and front and rear parking sensors. 

Stepping up to the Ford Kuga Titanium brings equipment such as Full LED headlights, nicer 18in alloy wheels, an electric tailgate and a premium sound system, as well as a digital instrument cluster. 

If you want a sportier looking Ford Kuga, check out the ST-Line model. With more aggressive body styling including a rear spoiler and red brake calipers, black roof rails and sports seats with electric adjustment on the driver’s side, it’s a desirable choice. You can also have the ST-Line X, with further equipment including 19in alloys and a panoramic roof. 

The Ford Kuga Vignale is the top-spec model. This more upmarket variant gets lashing of chrome on the outside, while inside there are heated leather seats front and rear, a heated steering wheel and electric seat adjustment on the driver’s side. 

You can fit lower spec Ford Kugas with some of the equipment of higher trims as part of Ford’s option packs. But when you come to sell the car, it’s those higher trim levels that will command the highest selling price.
