The original 500 was an Italian icon of the 1950s and 1960s, just like the Mini was an everyday British marvel. Fiat sold millions of them, and well-preserved models can fetch a small fortune these days. It was out of production for several decades, but Fiat finally brought it back to life with a brilliant retro recreation in 2007. 

This is the car that remains on sale today. It’s been modified over the years, with facelifts to tweak the styling and add modern LED lights. Inside, a neat touchscreen infotainment system also features on the latest cars. Fiat has even made fuel-saving mild-hybrid engine tech standard across the range. Thankfully, the charm of this compact city hero remains very much intact.

The Fiat 500 is a strict four-seater. And, with only two doors, passengers in the back will ideally be children rather than adults. Otherwise, those in the front will need to shove their seats forward. 

The Fiat 500 is available in regular three-door hatchback guise, or as a two-door Convertible, called the 500C. The latter has a large fold-back canvas roof, so it isn’t quite a full open-top car. Nonetheless, it’s still a lot of fun. 

Fiat has offered a colourful range of trims over the years. These days, all of them are pretty well-equipped, coming with the all-important air conditioning and core driver safety aids as standard. 

For years, the main Fiat 500 engine was a 1.2-litre petrol. Now it has been replaced by a 1.0-litre petrol with mild hybrid technology – the sole engine option in the regular Fiat 500 line-up. There has been a diesel engine in the past, and the 0.9-litre TwinAir was an intriguing choice too. But for most people, either the older 1.2-litre or new 1.0 will be fine. 

If you want more performance, the racy Abarth 595 is a hot hatch version of the Fiat 500. It has a 1.4-litre turbo engine offering from 145PS up to a thrilling 180PS – the latter version hitting 62mph in just 6.7 seconds. 

• Fiat 500 1.0 Mild Hybrid petrol: The little three-cylinder 1.0-litre mild hybrid engine produces 70PS, for 0-62mph in 13.8 seconds. CO2 emissions start from 114g/km and fuel economy of up to 56.5mpg is possible. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, but there’s no automatic option. The mild hybrid tech brings extended engine stop-start, which can improve everyday fuel economy in town. 

• Fiat 500 Electric: The new Fiat 500 Electric comes in two guises. There’s a 95PS version with a 24kWh battery and a 115-mile electric range, or a more potent 118PS version using a 42kWh battery. This delivers a far better real-world range of 199 miles. As with all EVs, an automatic gearbox is standard.

All new Fiat 500s are well equipped, with air conditioning even on the entry-level Pop, plus a range of bright colours that are complemented by a body-coloured dashboard. LED daytime running lights give a distinctive look on the outside and fabric seats carry the 500 logo within. 

The 500 Dolcevita is a really luxurious step up. It has alloy wheels, a fixed sunroof, rear parking sensors and a snazzy 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Dolcevita Plus brings climate control air-con, 3D sat-nav and a digital instrument display. 

Then there’s the 500 Sport, which has a mean and moody look, including 16-inch alloy wheels, dark-tinted rear glass and a graphite dashboard with a red 500 logo. A full sports body kit, with chunky bumpers, a roof spoiler, side skirts and a chrome exhaust complete the makeover. 

Other variants include the 500 Red, a model developed in partnership with the Red campaign, and the 500 Hey Google, which features extra connectivity via its colour touchscreen.
