The Audi A1 is a high-quality supermini for those looking to buy or lease a city-friendly car with an added touch of class. Neither BMW nor Mercedes-Benz offers a direct rival; BMW’s Mini brand is its closest competitor, along with high-end versions of the Volkswagen Polo, Peugeot 208 and Toyota Yaris. These days, Audi only offers the A1 in five-door Sportback guise. It’s also now a line-up that purely comprises petrol engines; diesel is no longer offered to new-car buyers. There isn’t a hybrid or electric version of the current A1, either. The first-generation Audi A1 was launched in 2010. It was derived from the Volkswagen Polo, but offered a more premium feel. Originally, it only had three doors; a five-door A1 Sportback followed in 2012. The car was facelifted in 2015. The latest Audi A1 Sportback was introduced in 2018, based on the underpinnings of the contemporary Polo and SEAT Ibiza. It’s only ever been offered with a five-door body, with Audi introducing the interesting A1 Citycarver version in 2019. This boasts a raised ride height and more rugged body styling. A smart and sophisticated-looking car, the A1 Sportback has a very premium feel inside. The fixtures and fittings are contemporary Audi in appearance, offering a high-tech look. The central touchscreen is also better integrated into the dashboard than inside the original car. Surprisingly roomy in the rear, the A1 Sportback has a decent boot, while the ultra-smooth petrol engines deliver excellent fuel economy. It has a stable, grown-up feel from behind the wheel, providing a sense of deep-down integrity that many find reassuring. It certainly justifies the price premium over a Polo. Complementing the Audi A1 Sportback’s technology-first image, the models and trims all have a sophisticated flavour. They’re all well-equipped, including a crisp colour touchscreen and an array of advanced safety-assistance tech. The crossover-style A1 Citycarver is no longer available to buy or lease new. However, most buyers prefer the standard versions anyway, with their sporty appearance and sleek profile. Many second-hand examples of the Audi A1 also look stylish, thanks to new-car buyers going for the higher-end S line grades, rather than the entry-level SE. This premium appearance is a key reason why people choose an A1 over a more ‘mainstream’ alternative such as a Volkswagen Polo. Audi A1 25 TFSI petrol: With a 95PS 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine, the Audi A1 Sportback 25 TFSI certainly isn’t the fastest small car around. It still delivers decent response once on the move, though – and rewards owners with fuel economy of more than 51mpg. Audi A1 30 TFSI petrol: Arguably a better choice for everyday motoring, the extra power of the 110PS 30 TFSI cuts 0-62mph acceleration to 10.5 seconds. It’s likely to prove more flexible when driving at motorway speeds, too. It’s able to return 50mpg although, like the 25 TFSI, is only offered with a manual gearbox. Audi A1 35 TFSI petrol: The 35 TFSI has a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo engine that produces 150PS. It is significantly quicker, with 0-62mph taking 7.7 seconds, yet fuel economy remains decent, averaging up to 46mpg overall. Unlike the 25 TFSI and 30 TFSI, it comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic automatic gearbox as standard. Audi A1 40 TFSI petrol: Boasting the largest engine of the A1 range, the 2.0-litre 40 TFSI has a 200PS output. It hits 62mph in just 6.5 seconds and features a seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard. Despite its lively performance, it still manages to return just over 40mpg. Just note that this higher-performance A1 will be notably more expensive to insure. The engine line-up of second-hand Audi A1 models will be familiar to drivers of other Volkswagen Group cars. The 1.2-litre and 1.4 turbocharged petrol engines are quiet and economical, while the 1.6-litre TDI diesel can provide exceptional fuel economy, particularly when cruising on the motorway. For those looking to buy or lease a new Audi A1, the range opens with Technik grade. This features alloy wheels and LED headlights, plus Audi’s MMI Radio Plus system with an 8.8-inch touchscreen and the Audi smartphone interface. Sport is the next rung up. On the outside, buyers will notice the larger alloys and extra styling details for the front air inlets. Inside, the A1 Sport gets sportier front seats, rear parking sensors and cruise control. A popular Audi variant across its entire model range, S line trim features bespoke body styling that is more dynamic than other variants, complemented by larger alloy wheels. The interior is more driver-focused as well, with hip-hugging seats and S line-branded upholstery. Black Edition is, as its name suggests, a black-themed take on S line, with a more monochrome appearance outside and in. You won’t miss it out on the road, as the roof, windscreen pillars and door mirrors are all finished in black. It feels plusher on the inside, too.
